Virginia Senate District 9 Special Election Candidate Selection Completed.

Jennifer McClellan, the current state Senator from District 9 (elected under the old district map) is resigning from the Senate to assume the seat of U.S. Congressional Representative from Congressional District 4. To provide continuous representation in the Virginia Senate for the remaining nine months of the office, a Special Election is called for Tuesday, March 28th. The candidates must be selected by Monday, February 27th.

If you are a voter in Senate District 9 and wish to participate in the party-run selection of candidates, your options are as follows:

Democrats
The unassembled caucus for the Democratic Party will be held on Sunday, February 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Voting locations are being planned and the most up-to-date list can be found on the party website at https://vademocrats.org/sd9-special/.

Republicans
The party has scheduled a firehouse primary from Noon to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 26th at 3429 W. Cary Street in Carytown (as reported in today's Richmond Times Dispatch).

Please note this election will be held for the old district 9, before redistricting was put into effect. Your old district is shown under the CURRENT tab of the STATE SENATOR tile on the Who's My Legislator? website. The new districts will elect Virginia General Assembly candidates at a June Primary and the November General Election. Those legislators will be sworn in in January 2024.
