What We’ve Accomplished: July 2022 through June 2023

Voter Service

  • Registered voters and provided voting and election information at many locations in the Richmond Metro Area, including colleges, retirement communities, the Richmond Folk Festival, forums, naturalization ceremonies, rallies, and the state’s Civic Education Summit.
  • Hosted Voter Registration Training by the Department of Elections for 45 participants, including League members and League partner organizations.
Collected candidate information for Vote411 and publicized this program widely.
  • Created and distributed Voter Fact Sheets for the November general election, February and March special elections, and June primaries.
  • Staffed phones at NBC Call12 to answer voters’ questions prior to the November election and two special elections.
  • Continued our Civics Education Program with Meadowbrook High School, registering 100 students over three days. Followed up with many on how to vote and engage with their elected officials after the elections.
  • Held a car parade on National Voter Registration Day.
  • Thanked our general registrars with Valentine cards on LWV’s anniversary
  • Began planning for candidate forums leading up to the November 2023 election.

Advocacy

  • Conducted four public forums on affordable housing: two forums on understanding zoning, one on manufactured housing, and one on homelessness in the region.
  • Observed electoral board meetings in four localities.
  • Testified in favor of Ranked Choice Voting at Richmond City Council and authored a letter to the editor of Richmond Times Dispatch.
  • Attended rallies in support of reproductive freedom.
  • Publicized online and in-person resources on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Participated in the Coming Together Virginia Unity Walk.
  • Partnered with AAUW, Delta Sigma Theta (Richmond Alumnae Chapter), FairVote Virginia, UpVote Virginia, and REV-UP Virginia.
  • Built our capacity to advocate for League positions at the Virginia General Assembly, by attending the “Pre-Session” forum, Women’s Legislative Round Tables, and League Day.
  • Participated in statewide studies and issue groups, leading three of the issue groups.
  • Conducted consensus discussions on four state studies for LWVVA positions (Education, Environmental Justice, Money in Politics, Child Care).
  • Sent our delegation of eight members plus additional members to the LWVVA Convention in Williamsburg. Co-presented one of the workshops.

Membership and Engagement

  • Welcomed new members with four orientation sessions, held virtually.
  • Convened two new committees: Education and Events Planning.
  • Communicated regularly with our members via the bi-weekly Mini-Leaguer.
  • Provided timely civic information to our members and the public on our website.
  • Returned to in-person meetings for social events, small group meetings, and our all-member advocacy planning and annual meetings.
  • Initiated local advocacy units starting with members in Henrico and Goochland counties.
  • Designed new artwork - “Voting is a Revolutionary Act” - on buttons and shirts, for sale to members and at the Virginia Convention in Williamsburg.
